Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth fired one of the top US military strategists amid preparations for a possible renewal of attacks in Iran. Army Lt. Gen. Brett Silvia has been removed from his role as director of strategy, plans and policy for the Joint Chiefs of Staff (J5). The J5 directorate is responsible for strategic planning, military policy development, and coordination of long-range plans for the use of the US Armed Forces. His duties also include coordinating military plans with the political decisions of the administration. Silvia is the second manager of J5 to be fired by Gest in the last year. His predecessor, Lt. Gen. Joseph McGee, was forced to retire in October 2025. The reasons for the dismissal of the news are not officially disclosed. According to the "Atlantic", Hesset lost faith in Sylvia. The general's disagreements with Under Secretary of Defense for Political Affairs Elbridge Colby are also reported. The resignation came as the Pentagon prepared options for a new military operation against Iran. US commanders continue to deploy more forces to the Middle East, and Donald Trump is considering resuming the strikes after the Nov. 3 congressional elections. His replacement has not yet been appointed. Since Gasth began leading the Pentagon in January 2025, at least 26 senior generals and admirals have left their posts. A significant number of personnel decisions were made without a public explanation of the reasons. VK Max Zen.
