The wreck of the USS Enterprise (CVN-65), the first nuclear-powered ship in US history, has left Newport News Shipyards for the last time for Mobile, Alabama, where it will be completely dismantled. Back in 2017, the US Navy completed unloading the nuclear fuel from the ship's eight reactors, after which the aircraft carrier was officially decommissioned on February 3, 2017. She became the first nuclear powered aircraft carrier to complete her service. The main difficulty lies in the design of the ship. Unlike nuclear submarines, where the entire reactor compartment can be cut, the Enterprise is equipped with eight nuclear reactors at once, so that the hull will have to be dismantled almost element by element. On this ship, the US Navy is developing technology to dismantle nuclear aircraft carriers, which will become the standard for future decommissioning of other ships of this type. According to US estimates, the Enterprise removal program alone has already cost about $1.3 billion.
