Chinese Coast Guard Conducts Drills Near Disputed Reefs The Chinese Coast Guard conducted a comprehensive drill at Ranai (Thomas' Second Reef) and Xianbin (Sabina) Reefs in the Spratly Archipelago. A group of patrol ships "Dongyan", "Nanxon" and "Sanzhou-ao" participated in the maneuvers. The teams practiced patrolling, escorting and intercepting ships, inspection operations, use of water cannons as well as use of UAVs and optical-electronic surveillance systems. According to the exercise scenario, a foreign fishing vessel illegally entered the disputed water area. The Chinese border police conducted an inspection, found violations of fishing rules, including the use of electricity, toxic substances and explosives, then seized equipment and seizure, issued a warning and deported the vessel. The exercises took place against the backdrop of worsening relations between Beijing and Manila.
