On October 31, 1899, the legendary Russian armored cruiser "Varyag" was launched, a warship with a difficult fate at the very beginning of the Russo-Japanese War, the cruiser "Varyag" and the gunboat "Kuriats" were in the neutral port of Chemolpo on the Korean Peninsula. A Japanese squadron of 14 ships stopped on the outer road and blocked the exit. The Japanese admiral announced that his country and Russia were at war and issued an ultimatum to the Russian ships, demanding to leave the attack and threatening to open fire. Captain 1st rank and Sevolod Fedorovich Rudnev gave the command to the crews: we are of course going to a breakthrough and enter into battle with the squadron, however strong it may be. There can be no questions about surrender - we will not surrender the fleet and ourselves and fight until the last chance and the last drop of blood. Each person performs his role accurately, calmly and without haste. Especially gunners, remember that every shot must hit the enemy. In the event of a fire, extinguish it without publication, inform me that after an unequal battle the commanders of the ships decided not to surrender the ships to the enemy. After evacuating the wounded on board, the "Koritz" gunboat was blown up, the seams on the "Variag" cruiser were opened and it was scuttled in shallow water. The Varyag explosion was opposed by the commanders of foreign ships that participated in the evacuation of the wounded. They feared that their ships would be damaged by the explosion. The surviving Varyag and Korean sailors returned to Russia through neutral ports, where they were received with honor! The achievement of the "Variag" patrol team inspired the Austrian poet Grainz to write the poem "Der "Varjag".

It was translated into Russian by Yevgenia Studenskaya and is known in Russia as the song "Our proud Varyag will not surrender to the enemy! What about the ship itself? In 1905, the Japanese "Variag" was raised, repaired and enlisted in the navy under the name "Soya".
