Iranian-born Canadian activist Parishad Kaviani, who has spent more than two years marching in support of Palestine, has publicly split from the movement, accusing former allies of hypocrisy, discrimination and selective protection of human rights. Kaviani said she has experienced more homophobia, racism and sexism from left-wing activists over the past nine months than ever before. Kaviani, who grew up under the Islamic Republic of Iran before moving to Canada at age 14, criticized pro-Palestinian activists for advocating for women's rights while remaining silent about Iranian women fighting against mandatory hijab laws and other restrictions imposed by Tehran. It also accused some activists of protecting the Iranian regime and sharing support materials with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). Kaviani said the October 7, 2023 Hamas attack on Israel was a turning point, explaining that she cannot support the killing, rape, torture or hostage-taking of civilians just because they are Israeli. She argued that human rights should apply equally to everyone, regardless of nationality or political beliefs, and accused parts of the movement of prioritizing ideology over protecting innocent people.
