Montenegro may join the European Union as early as the summer of 2027. The European Commission presented its annual enlargement report, in which it officially named Montenegro as the clear frontrunner in the process. All formal negotiations, which have been ongoing since 2012, may be completed by the end of 2026, and if the current pace of reforms continues, the signing of Montenegro's EU accession agreement is expected at the summit in June 2027.
