Glasgow's Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum has removed ancient Egyptian human remains from its exhibitions because the people who died thousands of years ago never gave their consent for the display.

The exhibits removed include the coffin and remains of Necht, an ancient Egyptian priest, a mummified right hand obtained from the Valley of the Kings in Luxor, and a male head and right foot.

The visitors discovered signs explaining that the remains were removed "as a mark of respect".

Scottish Conservative politician Murdoch Fraser condemned the decision:

"Even Egyptian mummies are now dismissed by a society so obsessed with modern sensibilities that it has lost all sense of perspective."

Kelvingrove, which attracts more than 1.3 million visitors each year, displays Egyptian mummies for generations.
