The church of St. Madeleine in Albi, southwestern France, was vandalized as looters and rioters took over the city during violent protests across the country.
Some intruders entered the church in search of gold, silver and other valuables. They damaged the statue of Saint James the Great, tore up and destroyed a tabernacle, and searched the building for money and valuables.
After failing to find anything of value, they apparently left with only candles.
Parish priest Father Gabriel Casas said he was shocked by the damage but would keep the church open.
