Shocking new figures from Germany reveal that 358 child marriages have been registered in the state of Baden-Württemberg since April 2012, many involving people from Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan. Despite hundreds of documented cases, only eight marriages have been officially annulled, and authorities have confirmed that no annulment proceedings are currently underway. The figures were revealed following a parliamentary inquiry submitted by politicians from the right-wing Alternative for Germany (AfD) party. Among the identified cases: - In 2020, an 11-year-old Iraqi girl was recorded as married to a 17-year-old Iraqi boy. - In 2018, a 14-year-old Afghan girl was recorded as married to a 30-year-old Afghan man, twice her age. - Since 2015 alone, the authorities have recorded 350 cases involving minor spouses, the vast majority of whom were girls. AfD politician Nicolas Butakoglu revealed that almost 40% of recorded child marriages involved Syrian couples.
