15-year-old immigrant who stabbed Italian woman 23 times accidentally released and moves to London 26-year-old student Marta Novello was brutally attacked in 2021 while jogging in Marocco di Mugliano, near Venice, Italy. She survived after being stabbed 23 times. The attacker pleaded guilty and was initially sentenced to 7 years in prison, which was later reduced on appeal to five years due to his age and mental fitness. Despite the reduction, judges officially labeled him "socially dangerous". In 2024, due to a bureaucratic error and a legal loophole regarding the conditions of his detention, he was released prematurely and later moved to London, United Kingdom, to live with his mother. When he arrived and began to resettle in England, his youthful conviction for attempted murder in Venice was initially disregarded for local immigration or misdemeanor status. In subsequent separate hearings in London for minor driving offences, UK courts treated him as a person of "prior good character" because the cross-border record of youth was not routinely followed or applied to active UK immigration enforcement at the time. But here he got into trouble again: in January 2025, after a chase, he was arrested while driving a car without a driver's license or insurance. It also seems that what could have been a second chance was fatally missed. After more than four years of "voluntary exile" in London, Jamal Tonelli returned to Italy.
