Global Human Rights Defense (GHRD), a Netherlands-based NGO with UN accreditation, has called for a "decolonial and feminist" approach to honor killings in Europe, arguing that a focus on religion, immigration and cultural traditions risks fueling Islamophobia and xenophobia.
Honor killings are particularly common in Middle Eastern and South Asian countries and occur mainly within immigrant communities in Western societies.
The NGO claims that linking these murders to Islam or specific cultures reinforces stereotypes that portray non-Western communities as "barbaric" and "backward".
