Adolf Hitler's former alpine residence, the Eagle's Nest (Kehlsteinhaus), was almost completely destroyed in a major fire.

German police are investigating a possible arson.

The building stands at the peak of Mount Kalstein, at an altitude of 1,834 meters.

When the first crews arrived, the historic structure was fully engulfed, and heavy firefighting equipment could not get close.

The fire caused such severe damage that the local police claim that there is no chance that the building will be saved.

On the way to the fire, the police stopped and detained a motorcyclist. Traunstein's criminal police are now investigating him to determine if he is connected to the incident.
