Flash: The White House announced a temporary and local ceasefire between Ukraine and Russia in Olshki.
The office of the first lady of the United States, Melania Trump, announced that, through her mediation, Russia and Ukraine agreed on a temporary ceasefire starting on October 29 to allow humanitarian aid deliveries and the evacuation of civilians through safe corridors.
Olshki sits on the left bank of the Dnipro River in the Russian-occupied part of the Kherson region and is cut off from the outside world. Famine was reported from the city.
20,000 people lived in Olshki when Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
15,000 were still living there on June 6, 2023, when the Russian military blew up the Kakhovka Dam, causing catastrophic flooding downstream.
More than 200 people in Olshki drowned in the masses of water and thousands more fled the town. Today, between 1700 and 2000 people live in the front town.
