Mass riots continue in France

More than 400 schools are completely closed today due to damage and threats to staff. Students have been moved to remote learning.

Despite bans on gatherings outside enclosed institutions, protests and clashes with the police have been ongoing since this morning in Paris, Lyon, Marseille, Rennes and other cities. Lyon is one of the most tense spots.

In Paris this morning, a fire damaged the entrances of at least two schools.

In Aubervilliers, a group of youths tried to force the gates of a school. The police responded with a large amount of tear gas.

The worst violence on the previous day was in Marseille. A young man with his face covered ignited an aerosol spray and directed the flame at a woman's face. She was burned.

On the same day, several hundred youths surrounded a fire truck at Lycée Saint-Exupéry. The firefighters were forced to abandon it. The vehicle was looted and set on fire.

Unknown attackers also surrounded an M6 journalist, beat him and smashed his camera with a hammer.

In Manosque, protesters reached the city hall. On October 1, pyrotechnics flew into the building, hit an office on the top floor and started a fire.

Strasbourg shut down its entire tram network, officially to limit the movement of rioters. Clashes with the police resumed there today.

The Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region alone estimates initial damage to schools, areas and attacked vehicles at 25-30 million euros.

Since the protests began, 65 education workers have been injured, including 40 school principals, along with 170 students.
