Israel suffered two significant blows tonight. The first was in the elections in Serbia, where the ruling party, a major supporter of Israel and a supplier of weapons during the war, was defeated. This ruling party was in power for 14 years. On the other hand, the winning party ("Student List") is one of the strongest supporters of the Palestinian people. The second was the victory of Brazilian President Lula da Silva, an ardent supporter of Palestine, over the opposition candidate supported by the United States and Israel. Brazil is a large and important country, the fifth largest in the world in terms of area (8.5 million square kilometers), the seventh largest in terms of population (216 million), and the eighth largest in terms of economic size (domestic product of 2.3 trillion dollars).
