UK Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband clashed with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov at the G20 Foreign Ministers' meeting, accusing Moscow of having no intention of ending its war against Ukraine and warning that Russia will not win. "We all know who the aggressor is in this war. Just yesterday, Russian drones attacked and killed 15 people at a train station in Dnipro. And there are countless examples of you killing innocent civilians throughout this entire war. We all know you are the aggressor," Miliband said, according to Sky News. He added that Russian leader Vladimir Putin expected to win the war quickly, but underestimated Ukraine's resistance and international support. "Putin thought he would win this war easily. But you will not win this war. Thanks to the courage of the Ukrainian people and the solidarity of the nations represented at this table, you will not win," Miliband said. He urged Lavrov to acknowledge that Russia cannot achieve victory and to convey this message to Putin. "If you had the courage to tell the truth and do the right thing, you would tell Putin that he is not winning this war and will not win it," he added. Following the meeting, EU Foreign Policy Chief Kaja Kallas said that Lavrov made many false and distorted statements but showed no willingness to engage in peace negotiations. "Even if the Russians claim otherwise in words, their actions suggest otherwise. Russia must prove through its actions that it is ready for negotiations," Kallas told Agence France-Presse. She pointed to the large number of Ukrainian civilians killed in Russian attacks during July, August, and September, and called for continued pressure on Moscow, particularly to ensure a ceasefire in the Black Sea. When asked why she did not take a joint photo with Lavrov, Kallas replied: "We must not normalize war crimes at this table."
