The hybrid war against the West continues: Pro-Russian hackers are targeting water supply systems, factories and even incinerators in NATO countries, causing real-world incidents and malfunctions, reports Bloomberg. Since the end of 2024, such attacks have been recorded in about 20 countries. In Spain, hackers disabled furnaces, started a factory fire and disrupted operations at wineries. In Denmark, about 450 households were left without water after a pumping station was breached. In the United States, hackers disrupted the operation of water purification facilities and cooling systems. In one meat processing plant, more than 900 kg of meat spoiled, and an ammonia leak forced an evacuation. The attacks are attributed to the CARR and Z-Pentest groups. US prosecutors allege that the Russian military intelligence agency GRU was involved in funding and directing CARR. Most worryingly, hackers often fail to understand the consequences of their actions. They compromise all the systems they can access, and seek to inflict maximum damage. Yulia Pankartova, one of CARR's leaders, told Bloomberg that the group intends to continue targeting hospitals and water infrastructure, claiming it does not recognize "red lines."
