The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, Andriy Sibiga, expressed his gratitude to the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Latvia Baiva Braja for the initiative to convene an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council after brutal Russian attacks on Ukrainian citizens. "While Russia is illegally using the Soviet Union's seat as a permanent member of the Security Council to evade responsibility, Latvia, in its first term as President of the UN Security Council, is using this opportunity to demand that Russia be held accountable. This is principled leadership in action. Russia must feel the real consequences of its crimes. We expect the Security Council to become a place where Russian atrocities will not only be discussed, but also strongly opposed. The minister thanked Latvia for its courage, solidarity and determination to defend the UN Charter when its basic principles were under attack.
