John "J" Rockefeller IV was the great-grandson of John Rockefeller, founder of the Standard Oil oil empire and the world's first billionaire.
He represented West Virginia in the US Senate for more than 30 years (1985–2015), and previously led the state as governor for eight years.
He chaired influential committees of the Senate, in particular the US Intelligence Committee, which oversaw the activities of US special services.
In 2008, he led an investigation that found the George W. Bush administration exaggerated intelligence on Iraq before the war.
He also had a political connection with Ukraine: in March 2014 he supported a legislative initiative in the Senate on aid to Ukraine, protection of its sovereignty and sanctions in response to Russian aggression.
