An investigation by the Italian newspaper Corriere provides a minute-by-minute description of the dramatic moments in which the Omani co-pilot on the Flydubai flight that was on its way to Tel Aviv tried to take control of the plane and crash it.
09:15: Co-pilot Hammam al-Hamami says he wants to go pray.
09:20: Al-Hamami attacks the Indian pilot, Captain Smith Machhar, from behind with an emergency ax. During the struggle that ensued, Machhar, who was injured, opens the cockpit door.
09:21: As passengers rush to get into the cockpit, al-Hamami disengages the autopilot, takes control of the plane, shuts down both engines and pushes the rudder forward as far as it will go, causing the plane to dive toward the ground over the Saudi desert.
09:22: Before being removed from the cockpit, al-Hamami tried to destroy the plane's systems. At this point, the Israeli passenger Yaniv Hayon pulls the steering rod towards him to prevent the plane from losing altitude.
09:25: Two pilots who were off duty intervened and returned the plane to a normal flight.
