Tens of thousands of people, mostly students and workers, demonstrated across Italy on Friday demanding higher wages, stronger public services and opposing rising living costs and increased military spending. A basic trade union organized a 24-hour general strike with demonstrations in over 40 cities. While the protests were mostly peaceful, tensions arose in some areas, most notably in Turin (where the footage comes from), where police used water cannons against students and activists near the district building. In Rome, protesters marched near the Colosseum, planning to camp this weekend, and set trash cans on fire. An attempt to march towards the parliament led to the police using water cannons, resulting in eight arrests. In Milan, protesters marched along the city's ring road and ended at the Politnico di Milano University, setting fire to objects. In Genoa, some 15,000 port workers, students and others demonstrated against ports used for arms shipments and the deaths of seafarers in conflicts, aligning with similar demonstrations in Europe and elsewhere.
