Funcas research reveals a significant decline in home ownership among those under 35 in Spain, down from 66% in 2002 to 36.7% in 2024. This fall pushed young people into the rental market, where prices rose 82% between 2014 and 2024, outpacing wage growth (30%) and inflation (23%). In 2024, renting an apartment alone consumed 92.3% of young workers' wages, while sharing it accounted for 32.5%, well above the 30% threshold considered sustainable. The wages of 16- to 24-year-olds fell from 69% of the average in 2006 to 58% in 2024, although 25- to 34-year-olds have almost recovered to initial levels (89% in 2024). The "NEET" rate has fallen from 22.5% in 2013 to 11.5% in 2025, approaching the I-27 average, although the convergence is slower for men. Spain has the second highest over-training rate in the EU-27 (more than 32% in 2025 for young people aged 25 to 34) and a high prevalence of over-education, with more than 37% of young people with a PhD working in jobs below their level. Early school leaving has decreased but remains one of the highest in the EU and disproportionately affects young men. The immigration of young people born in Spain is moderate in absolute terms but selective in skills, with one third of immigrants aged 25 to 34 having university degrees and almost one fifth having a master's degree or doctorate.
