The French government is preparing to ban social media platforms. The independent French publication Pitso published a letter from Prime Minister Sébastien LeCorneau, dated October 22, in which he instructs major telecommunications operators in France to prepare to block social media networks within hours of receiving the instructions. The letter refers to the unrest that took place in several French cities on October 17 and 18, alleging that social media platforms were used to coordinate acts of violence, looting and the movement of groups around police forces. LaCorno states that he wants to have the ability to "temporarily suspend" access to Snapchat, TikTok and Instagram using DNS filtering, in case the unrest reoccurs. The move "could be taken over the weekend of October 24 and 25" and could also include blocking Platform X, the letter said.
