Women made historic gains in the US midterm elections, securing at least 155 seats in Congress, including 132 in the House of Representatives, during the legislative session that begins in 2027, while the number of women in state governorships rose to at least 17, new record levels of female representation.
The Center on Women and American Politics, affiliated with the Eagleton Institute at Rutgers University, reported in a statement released Thursday, Nov. 5, that 135 women have already won seats in the House and Senate, including 114 Democrats and 21 Republicans, while 16 senators remain in office and four women who decided the contest are winning the race. The center explained that 128 women won seats in the House of Representatives, with four others guaranteed to win, bringing the number to at least 132, exceeding the previous record of 127 representatives in 2024. The gains went to state governments, as 15 women won gubernatorial elections, joining two remaining governors, bringing the total to at least 17, compared to the previous record of 14 in 2025.
