On Wednesday, a fire broke out at the Savannah River National Laboratory in the US state of South Carolina, inside a complex belonging to the Department of Energy that was previously used to produce materials used to make nuclear weapons, prompting the authorities to declare a state of emergency, close the roads leading to the facility and impose restrictions on air and train traffic in the area.
The Savannah River Complex said in a statement that a state of emergency was declared at 5:39 p.m. local time, before the response teams were able to extinguish the fire. He confirmed that no contamination was detected outside the affected facility, indicating that workers in the affected areas, who are not participating in the incident response operations, were housed in safe locations.
The Savannah River Complex is one of the most prominent American nuclear sites, as it was established in the early 1950s, during the Cold War with the Soviet Union.
According to the US Department of Energy, the complex is currently used for remediation, environmental cleanup and nuclear waste management activities.
