British King Charles III arrived yesterday in the Bahamas, for his first official visit to the archipelago since ascending to the throne, as part of a nine-day tour of the Caribbean region, amid protests and demands for an official apology and compensation for the era of slavery and carrying "historical responsibility" for British colonialism. Bahamas Governor-General Cynthia Pratt and Prime Minister Philip Davis welcomed King Charles upon his arrival, while authorities organized an official welcome ceremony involving police and military forces, and public schools on the island of New Providence were closed for the occasion. The King later traveled to Clifford Park, which he visited in 1973 when he was Prince of Wales, coinciding with the country's independence from Britain after almost 300 years of colonial rule. The visit coincided with protests organized by members of the Rastafari community and other citizens near Clifford Park, demanding compensation for violations related to slavery.
