The Turkish Ministry of Defense announced Ankara's willingness to sign an agreement with Egypt regarding the delimitation of maritime zones, stressing that such an agreement would achieve greater gains for Cairo compared to a possible agreement with Greece.
The ministry said in its weekly briefing on Wednesday that signing an agreement with Turkey would give it, according to Turkish estimates, an additional area of maritime areas exceeding 15,000 square kilometers compared to a possible agreement with Greece.
She added that the ratification by the Libyan House of Representatives on October 20 of the memorandum of understanding signed between Turkey and Libya in 2019 regarding the delimitation of maritime jurisdictions represents an important development that supports Ankara's approach based on international law and the principles of fairness, and taking into account the legitimate rights of the coastal state and the interests concerned.
The ministry emphasized that Turkey will continue to protect its rights and legitimate interests in the Eastern Mediterranean, in accordance with international law, and will contribute to strengthening regional peace, security and stability.
