The American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) has announced that it will stop declaring its direct support for political candidates and making direct electoral contributions to them, in light of the growing criticism of its intrusion and the growing opposition to Israel within the United States.
The organization confirmed that it will continue its political activity through additional channels, including its independent political action committee, the United Democracy Project, in addition to encouraging its members and donors to provide money directly to pro-Israel candidates.
The Michigan primary revealed the extent of the challenges facing AIPAC, after its joint committee spent more than $30 million to support Democratic representative Haley Stevens, who lost the nomination to Israel critic Abdel Said amid reports that about $9 million was directed to support a group supporting Republican candidate Mike Rogers.
