South Korea's Yonhap news agency reported that the northern neighbor has planted about 960,000 mines along the border between the two countries since 2024.

It cited country officials on Thursday as saying that South Korea's military recently submitted a briefing to the National Assembly on North Korea's movements on the border, indicating that Pyongyang has stepped up border fortification work since 2024, planting some 960,000 mines along the area separating the two Koreas.

She added that the South Korean military has seen an increase in the activity of North Korean soldiers related to the laying of wire, the laying of mines and the deployment of anti-tank equipment along the military border line, and noted the estimates of some military experts that there are more than two million mines in the demilitarized zone separating the two countries, including mines planted by South Korea.
