The attorney for a Mexican worker on Monday accused members of the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency of intentionally running over her client with an SUV in Houston, Texas, causing serious injuries, while local authorities opened an investigation into the incident on suspicion of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

Miguel Parra, a 48-year-old construction worker, was on his way to work Saturday when the accident occurred while ICE was conducting a security operation in the area. Surveillance footage showed an SUV heading toward Parra after he got out of his car, while the agency said he "ran in front of a vehicle belonging to him" and was subject to a collision, and confirmed that he was targeting another person with him.

On the other hand, his lawyer, Kim Bruno, said that what happened "was not an accident, but a deliberate act." District Attorney Shawn Ter said that experienced investigators examined the scene of the accident and reviewed surveillance recordings and concluded that the incident did not appear to be an "accidental collision," at a time when the "ICE" agency faces increasing criticism over the methods it uses in the a rrests and deportations of immigrants.
