An artificial intelligence model developed by Anthropic sent a false report to Philadelphia police about an unsolved murder, in an event that drew criticism for the company's two-month delay in reporting the incident.
The Philadelphia Police Department said the report was submitted on July 18 through a website that allows for the sharing of information about unsolved murders.
According to what Anthropic explained to the police, the AI model went through a test that involved interacting with randomly selected websites, when it arrived at the website and sent false information about a case, presenting itself as someone who might have information about the crime.
The Philadelphia police explained that the report was classified as an unsolicited message, and did not reach the department's real-time crime center for verification, stressing that there were no indications of any crime.
