A man was shot by a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer on Thursday during a security operation in the Marble Hill neighborhood of the Bronx in New York, while a 5-year-old boy was inside the man's car, according to U.S. officials.

Initial reports indicated that immigration agents surrounded the man and the boy inside the car before firing several shots, and that the boy was not injured.

The US Department of Homeland Security said that immigration agents were carrying out an operation targeting a man from the Dominican Republic living in the United States irregularly, and that one of the agents shot him, without explaining the circumstances of the incident.
