A Pentagon official said Thursday that the firing squad execution of Nidal Hassan, convicted of carrying out the 2009 Fort Hood shooting attack, will be webcast live, while Defense Secretary Pete Hegsett confirmed that the execution will be public.

The official, who asked to remain anonymous, added to the French news agency: "The execution will be broadcast live over the Internet, and the details will be published later."

Hagset said in a video released by the Pentagon that Hassan was executed by firing squad by a platoon of soldiers, adding: "We will make sure that people can see it and that it is public." During his conversation with right-wing influencer Jack Posovic aboard the American aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln, he stated that the goal was to show that such actions carry "serious consequences."

According to the report, Hassan's execution would be the first execution carried out by the US military since 1961. The move comes at a time when public executions are drawing criticism for human rights.
