An inspection mission at Chippenong prison near the Indonesian capital, Jakarta, revealed a compound attached to the prison that includes "villas" and residential apartments, while reports indicated that inmates pay rent to stay there.
Photographs from inside the compound showed rooms equipped with air conditioners, equipped bathrooms, beds and table tennis tables, while the authorities noted that the compound includes a swimming pool and a gym, and a mini golf simulator was built.
The authorities uncovered an unlocked gate connecting the courtyard of the units to the bamboo forest, which allowed the prisoners to leave the compound and return to it. The authorities confirmed that inside the units were found prisoners from the "Chapinong" prison, and noted that an investigation is underway with 52 prisoners so far. The authorities completely destroyed the units of the complex, and suspended the director of the prison and four of his superiors, while investigating the case.iw
