School students in Germany plan to organize about 100 demonstrations across the country on Friday to protest the possible return of conscription, according to what was announced by the "School strike against conscription" initiative.

The spokeswoman for the initiative, Bella Breitner, said in statements to the German News Agency (DPA) that "the German government is serious about the gradual return of conscription", adding that the participants will continue the strike until the option of conscription is removed from the agenda.

The new military service law entered into force last January, and mainly states that young people born in 2008 and later are subject to a mandatory examination, with the aim of attracting volunteers to expand the strength of the German armed forces.

If the stated goals are not achieved, the German parliament (Bundestag) can make a decision to impose conscription, which Germany suspended in 2011.
