The United States has proposed establishing a joint "notification mechanism" with China to report incidents related to artificial intelligence that "may affect national security," according to statements by US Treasury Secretary Scott Bastnet.

Bessant said on Sunday, after talks with Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng in New York, that Washington "seeks to improve transparency between the two countries regarding artificial intelligence," noting the importance of identifying common targets and threats.

Besant and US Trade Representative Jamison Greer added that the talks laid the groundwork for a meeting planned for Thursday between US President Donald Trump and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping at the White House.

China's Xinhua news agency reported that the two sides discussed issues related to artificial intelligence, in addition to key economic and commercial cases, without revealing details of the proposed notification mechanism.
