Researchers in the high cloud forests of the Yungas in Bolivia have discovered a new species of small wild cat, locally called "tilkayo". It is about 46 centimeters long and weighs about 1.4 kilograms, and is characterized by light brown fur and spots that resemble small roses. This is the first official description of a new species of living cat in more than a century.

"Tilkayo" belongs to the group of "tiger cats" spread over large areas in South America. The researchers relied on genetic data to confirm that it represented a previously unknown species, and they gave it the scientific name "Leopardus Tilcayo", while retaining its local name.

Researchers still know little about this cat's characteristics, behavior and lifestyle, but small rodent remains found in samples of its droppings suggest it may have been adopted as part of its diet, while hidden camera footage suggests it may be more active at night.
