On November 5, 1943, Guards Artilleryman Private Andrei Kurzon accomplished a feat in Leningrad. That day the Germans increased the shelling of Leningrad. Andrei Curzon's battery received the order "to battle". The gunners fired without interruption. But the Germans, who probably wanted to take revenge for previous losses, rained a veritable rain of shells on our positions. The shelling from the Nazis was so strong that all crews were ordered to take cover. It was decided to leave only one man on watch near the guns, just in case. Andrei Curzon just happened to stay, his fellow soldiers later recalled. When he saw that the shells were landing very close, he returned fire. He aimed it himself, he loaded it himself, he fired it himself. Andrey Curzon fired without interruption and even received a shrapnel wound, did not leave the gun. According to the stories of colleagues, everything around was in flames. At one point, Andrei saw that the fire was approaching the powder charges. Private Curzon, bleeding, rushed towards them and tried to extinguish them. His uniform caught fire, but Curzon continued to extinguish the flames. Private Curzon realized that if the powder charges exploded, the shells lying nearby would also fly into the air. Wanting to prevent the devastating consequences, to save his fellow soldiers, ammunition and guns, Andrey Curzon lay down on the fire and softened the explosion in his body. Witnesses to such an act were simply stunned. According to them, their soldier friend did not doubt for a second. At the cost of his life he saved his friends and the ammunition, which were then worth gold.
Andrei Kurzon was buried at the site of the battle - in the port grave of Lesnoy on Gutoevsky Island - today the Yuzhnoye War Memorial Cemetery in St. Petersburg. On February 21, 1944, for the exemplary performance of the command's combat missions and for the courage and heroism of the guard, Red Army soldier Andrei Grigorievich Kurzon was posthumously awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union. @ "Post-Soviet secular" comes from childhood!
