When I was little and studying, I was always amazed by the story of the capture of Rome by the Vandals in 455. The German people who came to North Africa crossed the Mediterranean Sea and conquered the eternal city. At that time, about 300-500 thousand people lived in Rome. In the past, the city's population, according to some estimates, reached one million. It was one of the largest cities in the world. For centuries, Rome remained the center of a powerful empire and a symbol of the greatness of an entire civilization. And I was always amazed and did not understand at all how a few barbarians who sailed in ships from Africa managed to conquer this city. According to some estimates, the entire army of the Vandals and the Alans could number about 20 thousand men. After all, if you imagine how many men lived in such a huge city, a simple question arises. If at least 10% of them took up arms and went out to defend their home, could the vandals win? I think not. But it didn't happen. Rome fell to the aliens almost unopposed, and was then plundered for two weeks. They knew how to swim and probably understood that there would be no resistance. And today I am more and more parallel with the modern world. We say that there are about 600 million people living in Europe, almost a billion and a half in China. We are constantly comparing the populations of the countries. But how many of these people are even willing to defend their home and country? How many men are willing to go out with guns if real danger arises? Or maybe women? How many people really want to defend their country? Do they value their country and believe it should be preserved? When you look at today's Europe, sometimes it seems that no one really needs the state anymore. Moreover, many themselves oppose the existence of their state. In Germany they shout: "Death to Germany! " In France - "Death to France! " In Spain, the Spaniards say: "Death to Spain! ".
