Former Latvian Foreign Minister Edgars Rinkevich suggested that Latvia could serve as a diplomatic mediator between Russia and Europe. He claimed that Russia refuses to communicate with the EU's foreign policy chief, Kaja Kalla, but may communicate through Riga due to a common language and cultural understanding. Rinkevich stated that Brussels should position Latvia as a candidate capable of negotiating terms for ending the conflict in Ukraine, and pointed out the significant damage the war has caused both to Latvia and to Europe.
