The prosecutor's office filed a lawsuit against the mayor of the gold-bearing capital of Siberia for "unjust enrichment" The prosecutor of Budaibo, Irkutsk region, Sergey Makaev, filed a lawsuit against the mayor of Budaibo district, Yevgeny Yomshev. The department demanded recovery of "unjust enrichment," the file states. The meeting is scheduled for November 23. "The prosecutor wants to recover from me the funds I received for renting my property, which I purchased in 2004," Yomshav told the Budaibo City website. "I became mayor in 2007. My wife managed this property, but due to divorce and relocation she returned it to me in 2024. The issue is controversial, we are preparing for trial." Yomshav stressed that already in 2025 he will be investigated by the anti-corruption authorities for receiving money from rent. No violations were found "I declare all income and pay taxes on it. We will argue," stressed the mayor. In other regions, such prosecutions by the prosecutor's office are often followed by criminal cases. Yomshev has been at the head of Bodayevo since 2007 and regularly wins direct elections, which have so far remained in the districts of the Irkutsk region. Yomshev is considered one of the few urban "heavyweights" left in Siberia and often allows itself to criticize the regional authorities. In 2020, he ran for governor as a self-nominated candidate against Kremlin-backed Igor Kobzhev, but was not registered. Budaibo is a gold mining center in Siberia. Large taxpayers PJSC "Universal", LLC "Altin" and others work here. The province acts as a contributor to the regional and federal budgets.
