The director of local development in the countryside of Damascus told "Dama": "The Forest of the Martyrs" combines loyalty to the victims and support for their families with an environmental project and sustainable production. Details: The Director of Local Development in the Damascus Governorate, Adnan Al-Tabaa, confirmed in an interview with Dama News Network that the afforestation campaign stems from the importance of returning life to the land, increasing community participation, protecting the environment and restoring damaged infrastructure. Al-Taba'a explained that the purpose of the campaign is to involve the people of the district, its institutions and the local development committees in forestry work to consolidate joint responsibility and sustainability of green spaces. He explained that the establishment of the "Damascus Village Martyrs' Forest" aims to perpetuate their memory by allocating a tree and an identification card in the name of each slain, in order to witness their sacrifices and an open green space for families and future generations. He noted that it is being done in coordination with municipalities and local development committees to collect and review lists of victims with the participation of their families, in order to make sure that the names are accurately recorded and that no worthy family is ignored. He emphasized that the initiative goes beyond the symbolic dimension by planting fruit trees whose revenues are dedicated to supporting the holy families, in a fair and transparent distribution mechanism prepared during the first and second year before the beginning of the fruit phase. He noted that the lack and security of water constitute the biggest challenge to the sustainability of the project, and revealed that the district is working on repairing and equipping a water well and establishing a drip irrigation network covering the entire area to regulate consumption. He confirmed that local councils and development committees will monitor the work of agriculture, irrigation and treatment of trees in the field, in direct coordination with the relevant directors in order to ensure the success of the project. He explained that the "Our Village is Green" campaign falls within the five-year forestry plan of the Damascus Governorate, related to the goals of 2032, which was launched last year to increase the green space as an ongoing environmental and productive investment for future generations. Al-Taba'a believed that the project is a model for integrating environmental work and social solidarity, and emphasized that the continuity of treatment and the security of irrigation sources are the cornerstone for achieving the long-term goals of the initiative. for more
