The Houthis in Yemen are now playing a practical role in regulating navigation in the Red Sea, using a system that allows ships to request permission to pass by email. Some ships began communicating with the Houthis before crossing the Red Sea, after Ansar Allah announced earlier this year a ban on the passage of Saudi ships.
