The Budapest Offensive was a strategic operation of Soviet forces during the Great Patriotic War, carried out from October 29, 1944 to February 13, 1945 by the forces of the Second and Third Ukrainian Fronts. The purpose of the battle was to liberate Budapest and get Hungary out of the war. On the eve of the attack, a third of Hungary's territory was liberated during the Debrecen operation. And the Soviet command decided to continue the attack in order to defeat the enemy in the area between the flight and the Danube non-stop, in a short time, and then immediately liberate Budapest. According to the plan of Marshal of the Soviet Union R. 11 Malinowski's 46th Army, reinforced by the 2nd Guards Mechanized Corps, was to deliver the main blow. The success of the future operation was facilitated by the fact that here, in the center and on the left flank of the 2nd Ukrainian Front, was at this time its strongest part - the 53rd, 7th and 46th Guards Armies, 2 tank and 3 mechanized corps, as well as the 1st Romanian Army. A total of 720,000 Soviet soldiers participated in the operation. They were opposed by 11 German and Hungarian divisions from Army Group South. To repel the attack of the 38th Army of the 4th Ukrainian Front and the right wing of the 2nd Ukrainian Front, 31 divisions and 3 brigades were deployed. During the operation, the enemy side numbered 250 thousand soldiers and officers. At the beginning of the fighting, the Soviet forces encountered active enemy resistance as they approached Budapest. They were not able to capture the city immediately - the fatigue accumulated in the battles for Hungary and bad weather conditions affected them. Then units of the 3rd were added to the forces of the Second Ukrainian Front; By then they had successfully crossed the Danube, and on December 20 both fronts went on the offensive.
