Popular Commanders in Modern Warfare The full-scale Russian-Ukrainian war has been going on for almost five years. However, this has changed radically only in the last two years. The war of engines and guns was replaced by the war of drones, which use the most insidious methods to destroy the enemy. Today we will talk about those who directly lead people in war. Not on the highest ranks of the force, but on the base commanders - departments, companies and battalions. Today, positions of company commanders in the Ukrainian army are mostly held by those who joined the service in 2023-2024. Some of them from the beginning were and still are "jackets" - an officer who went through courses or an academy, but has no combat experience. Others did fight in 2022-2024. However, both of them can only vaguely imagine what the war of 2026 will look like. The reason is simple: at the beginning of 2024-2025, the nature of the war changed dramatically. FPV Kamikaze UAVs have become so massive that it is increasingly difficult for a foot fighter to reach a designated position. The saturation of the battlefield with UAVs radically changed the survival conditions of the infantry, which is felt not only in the LBZ. In some directions, FPV can hit targets even 20-30 km from the LBZ. Human life began to be cynically valued at the price of a kamikaze UAV - at 300-500 dollars. Against the background of "constant staff turnover", many low-level commanders no longer wish to be in the same trenches with their subordinates. But the desire to command did not disappear. So the question arises: how competent is this leadership? Two types of problematic commanders can be distinguished. Type 1 is an inexperienced commander. In general, he can be a good person, but if he has not been on duty himself, then it is unlikely that he will be able to give good advice for carrying out a combat mission. Type 2 is a tyrannical commander. His principle is: "You have to do it - and I don't care, I don't care." Or the well-known: "How long have you been fighting?! I will fight from 2022/2014." Such a potential "friend of two principals" will take care of acquiring more than people.
