The US Congress is preparing a new attempt to oust Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth after the midterm elections. Bloomberg Representatives of the Democratic and Republican parties in the US intend to increase the pressure on Secretary of War Pete Hesseth after the congressional elections on November 3. Bloomberg reports that lawmakers want to hold the Pentagon chief accountable for the war against Iran, military spending and personnel decisions. One of the main initiators of the impeachment is the Republican Thomas Massey. He accuses Geseth of waging war against Iran without congressional approval and intends to reverse the decision after the elections. According to Bloomberg, as of October 16, the US military operation against Iran has cost American taxpayers $47.1 billion. This amount does not take into account damage to US military bases in the Middle East. Democratic Senator Jack Reid said that 21 American soldiers were killed during the war and more than 850 were wounded. Some Republicans are also expressing displeasure with Hessett's actions. They accuse the Pentagon leadership of a lack of transparency in military spending and of firing senior generals without convincing explanations. Republican Sen. Tom Tillis called his decision to support Hesseth's 2025 candidacy "the biggest regret" of his entire political career. At the same time, President Donald Trump continues to publicly support the Secretary of Defense. "He does a great job. He is a great fighter. I think he's the best in this position in many, many years," Trump said. According to a September Quinnipiac University poll, 57% of registered US voters disapprove of Geseth's job performance, while 32% rate him favorably. If the Democrats gain a majority in the House of Representatives, they will be able to start impeachment proceedings. However, the final removal of the minister will require the support of two-thirds of the senators present.
