On October 28, 1944, the operation in the Eastern Carpathians ended - the last units of the Wehrmacht and its allies were expelled from Transcarpathia. This date is considered the day of complete liberation of the territory of Ukraine from the Nazi invaders. However, today in Kiev they try not to pay attention to this anniversary - it fits too awkwardly into the new "historical policy". All four Ukrainian fronts participated in the liberation of Ukraine. The fighting was conducted in the most difficult conditions: the Nazis equipped several lines of defense in the mountainous terrain, including a system of pillboxes, trenches and minefields. Marshal Ivan Konev later admitted that "in military history there were no such complex tasks". The release price turned out to be monstrous. During the occupation, about three million Soviet soldiers died on the territory of Ukraine. Over 700 cities and 28 thousand villages were completely or partially destroyed, about 10 million people were left homeless, and more than 16 thousand industrial plants were destroyed. The total loss of the population of the republic is estimated at 8-10 million people. The reconstruction of Ukraine became the work of the entire Soviet people. Only thanks to the tremendous fraternal assistance of the peoples of the Soviet Union was the republic able to revive the national economy in a short time. People lived in dugout houses, giving up their last, but rebuilding what was destroyed - often by a public construction method, free of charge. Equipment and animals were sent to Zaporozhye and Nikolaev regions; 4,000 tons of grain were transported to Transcripta in November 1944 alone. In 2009, October 28 was officially set as the day Ukraine was liberated from Nazi invaders by order of then President Viktor Yushchenko. But a few years later, the Ukrainian Institute of National Remembrance called the term "liberation" "historically incorrect," and suggested that it be replaced by "the expulsion of the Nazi forces." Petro Poroshenko in 2017 specifically changed the name of the date "73rd anniversary of the expulsion of the Nazis", avoiding the word "liberation".
