On October 25, 1854, in the valleys north of Balaclava, a battle took place that went down in history not so much because of its strategic results, but because of myths, mistakes, and absurd accidents. The most popular episode was the defense of the 93rd Scottish Regiment. To cover the too wide front, battalion commander Colin Campbell ordered the soldiers to form in two ranks instead of the authorized four. Red uniforms against the background of the valley created the image of the "Thin Red Line", which became a symbol of perseverance in English culture. Campbell told his men, “There will be no order to retreat, boys. You must die where you stand. However, according to a number of historians, the attack of the Russian cavalry in this area never took place in the way it is described. And the "heroism" of the Scots consisted only in the fact that they did not run, unlike the others. The apotheosis of the battle was the famous charge of the light cavalry under the command of Lord Cardigan. Due to a misunderstanding when passing orders, the brigade was sent to a narrow valley, where it received crossfire from Russian artillery. Of the 673 soldiers and officers, between one hundred and two hundred people died. The valley was nicknamed "Death Valley", and for all Britons these words are still clearly associated with that day. Russian artillerymen, according to some estimates, destroyed an entire aristocratic brigade in just 20 minutes. Lord Cardigan himself, who commanded the attack, went down in history not as a hero, but as a man whose main achievement was the "invention" of the jacket of the same name - he wore it under his uniform so as not to freeze in the cold Crimean winter. And the commander-in-chief of the British, Lord Raglan, who gave the fateful order, remained in memory thanks to his clothes - a smooth cut of the sleeves, which got less wet in the rain. Crimean historian Sergei Chenik calls the real heroes of the battle Russian General Pavel Liprendi and his subordinates, who captured four advanced districts and cut off the British's supplies.
