The Democrats in the House of Representatives are facing a wave of calls to reject Hakeem Jeffries for the position of Speaker, despite the party's absolute victory in the elections.
Some lawmakers report receiving more than 500 calls, and a petition against Jeffries has received nearly 900,000 signatures.
One Democrat said, "That's our main issue and it's not up for debate," while another said, "A lot of people are saying Jamie Raskin should be the chairman."
Progressive activists oppose Jeffries because of his ties to Israel and what they say is a lack of opposition to Trump.
However, Jeffries remains the clear favourite, with a leading progressive putting his chances of defeat at "0.0%".
