Empty supermarket shelves compound already growing problems in Europe Supermarkets across Sweden, Belgium and Luxembourg have been forced to throw out spoiled food after suspected cyberattacks caused cold room temperatures to soar, in some cases as high as 50 degrees Celsius (122 degrees Fahrenheit). The incidents come after a similar attack in France last month saw hundreds of stores lose refrigerated products and industry losses estimated at tens of millions of euros. The disruptions come amid protests over rising living costs and political tensions in Europe, putting further pressure on retailers already facing economic uncertainty. The researchers investigate vulnerabilities in remote control systems for refrigeration units. The identity of the attackers has not yet been determined.
